New York City, 1899. How do you get your newspaper? A newskid, of course! Jack Kelly is one of them. Like any kid, he has dreams – he longs to move outside the city and live the life of an artist.

When newspaper king Joseph Pulitzer hikes up his profits by way of the newskids earnings, Kelly leads an uprising against the poor wages and working conditions faced by his fellow workers. A
reporter, Katherine Plumber, uses the power of the press to bring attention to their cause, helping
the entire city recognize the power of people, even the young and small.

Based on the actual Newsboy Strike of 1899, Newsies is a lively musical that takes on meaningful and timeless themes of social justice, the history of labor movements, and the power of the underdog.

The heart of this high energy story comes to life in our intimate theater program limited to just 30
participants. During the 3-week camp, youth will take on characters, learn songs and dancing, and
prepare for the full-scale production to be held at the Barnard Town Hall with original staging,
costuming, choreography and a live band! Our team of theater professionals will teach, guide, and
inspire your kids. Daily schedule includes a mid-morning snack and a long break for lunch, supervised outdoors at the Barnard Academy.
