Casting
12 lead roles plus 12-20 featured roles doubling as an ensemble of nuns, neighbors & festival contestants. Singers may choose to just be in the nun chorus and not in other roles.
All ages, genders and experience-levels welcome!
The show will be cast to reflect the full diversity of the world today.
Rehearsals begin in late April and will include Sunday afternoons and Tues, Wed & Thurs evenings. Not all actors will be called to each rehearsal.
Character Descriptions
NOTE: Ages listed are ages actors will be playing. The actors need not be the same age, but able to portray.
ADULT LEADS
Maria Rainer (25-35) A postulant at Nonnberg Abbey – spunky, head-strong, free-spirited, warm, gentle and kind with much determination. NOTE: Should be comfortable with on-stage intimacy including possible kisses with Captain von Trapp.
Captain Georg von Trapp (35-50) A retired Austrian naval captain. Polished, yet very military in the way he runs his life to repress his sadness over the death of his wife. Underneath, he is warm, understanding, and determined. NOTE: Should be comfortable with on-stage intimacy including possible kisses with Maria.
Max Detweiller (30+) A charming and vital good friend to Georg, and like an uncle to the children. A man of sophistication who enjoys the good life.
Elsa Schrader (35-45) A baroness of taste and elegance, sophisticated, dignified and mature.
Mother Abbess (40+ very strong singer) Motherly, strong and authoritative, but big-hearted.
YOUTH LEADS
Liesl von Trapp (16) The oldest child. She is innocent, naive, flirtatious, headstrong and infatuated with Rolf. Cares very deeply for her younger siblings. NOTE: Should be comfortable with moments of intimacy including a potential kiss with Rolf.
Friedrich von Trapp (14) Tough exterior, very much trying to be “the man” of the family.
Louisa von Trapp (13) Rebellious attitude.
Kurt von Trapp (10, falsetto) Gentle and mischievous.
Brigitta von Trapp (9) Smart, reads a lot. Truth teller.
Marta von Trapp (7) Very sweet and gentle.
Gretl von Trapp (5) Cute and endearing.

FEATURED CHARACTERS (double as ensemble)
Sister Berthe (20+) Mistress of Novices, prudish, straight-laced with a quick tongue, she is less tolerant than other nuns.
Sister Margaretta (20+) Mistress of Postulants, very kind, understanding and concerned.
Sister Sophia (20+) Neither demanding nor critical, sticks with the rules.
Rolf Gruber (17*) Suitor to Liesl, telegram delivery boy, later Nazi soldier. NOTE: Should be comfortable with moments of intimacy including a possible kiss with Liesl.
Franz (30+) The von Trapp butler, rather formal but not without spirit, he is very German and loyal to the Fascist cause.
Frau Schmidt (30+) The housekeeper, stoic, does her job efficiently but without affection. Strong and somewhat dominating.
Herr Zeller (40+) Stern and unsmiling, a Nazi official whose primary concern is to see that everyone toes the line.
Ursula (16+) A maid of the von Trapps.
Baron Elberfeld (40+) Austrian who is aghast of what he sees as the German invasion.
Baroness Elberfeld (40+) The Baron’s wife.
Frau Ullrich (30+) Dinner companion of Herr Zeller.
Admiral von Schrieber (40+) of the German Navy. Has a mission, and is there to do it, but not as stern as Herr Zeller.
ENSEMBLE (many will double as featured characters)
7-15 female chorus members (16-60+ years) – Salzburg citizens, postulants, nuns, novices, and contestants in the Festival Concert.
5-10 male chorus members (16-60+ years) – Nazi soldiers, neighbors, Salzburg citizens and Georg’s friends (of naval background).
